Less than half of the sunlight which reaches the earth is visible. The light that we can see is called white light. White light is made up of all the colours that we can see. When white light goes through a prism, it splits into the different colours that it is made up of. This is seen in the picture below.

Our eyes cannot see some kinds of light. About half of the sunlight that reaches us is made up of infrared light. We cannot see infrared light but we can feel it as heat. A small amount of sunlight is made up of ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light is also called ultraviolet radiation or UV radiation. We cannot see or feel UV radiation but it can harm us if we are not careful.
