Girls and boys do not go through the same changes during puberty. Some changes only happen in girls. These changes prepare the girls’ bodies to become mothers someday.
What happens to girls during puberty?
- Eggs begin to develop: During puberty, hormones cause girls’ to change. One of these hormones is called estrogen. These hormones cause the eggs in girls’ ovaries to start developing.
- Girls’ bodies become curvier: Girls develop breasts and their hips widen. They start to look more like women.

During puberty, girls begin to look more like women.
- The menstrual cycle: During puberty, girls begin to experience their menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle is the process that prepares the body for a possible pregnancy. This cycle takes about one month. Part of this cycle is the menstrual period, when the body breaks down and sheds the lining of the uterus. This is perfectly normal and it is nothing to be ashamed of.
