Sand

Sandy soil, or sand is made up mostly of grains of sand. Sand grains are relatively large and loose. Look at the picture below. What do you notice about the sand? Do the grains of sand stick together?

Properties of sandy soils

• Sandy soils drain quickly. They are not very good at holding water.
• Sandy soils are light and easy to cultivate.
• Sandy soils contain very little organic matter.
