Loam

Loam soil is made up of organic matter, sand, clay and silt. Particles of silt are bigger than clay particles but smaller than grains of sand. The organic matter in loam soil gives the soil a dark brown or even black colour. Loam soil can be seen in the picture below.

Properties of loam

  • Loam holds water much better than sandy soil.
  • Loam drains more easily than clay.
  • Loam is rich in nutrients.
  • Loam is easier to cultivate than clay.
