Transparent or translucent

What does transparent mean?

Some objects, like clear glass or clear plastic, allow light to pass straight through them. Because of this you can clearly see what’s in a clear plastic jar or a behind a clear glass window. When objects allow light to pass easily through them, we say that they are transparent. In the picture below, we can clearly see the scenery outside because the glass in the window is transparent.

What does translucent mean?

Some objects allow some light to pass through but the light is scattered. Because of this you cannot clearly see what is on the other side. The object looks blurry or fuzzy. We say that these objects are translucent. In the picture below, translucent glass is used in the bathroom. Because of this you cannot clearly see the person in the bathroom.

Why do you think translucent glass was used in this bathroom and not transparent glass?
